A new fad is swooping across the livers of Britain, exuberating itself as a symbol of British Identity, oozing in class and superiority, a tipple that is not just a beverage, but an accessory to fashion, with leading models such as Agyness Deyn and Alexa Chung favouring it as their drink of choice, clutching onto it like a statement piece.

It is a potion that is fit for royalty, with then Queen, her majesty Queen Elizabeth sipping on it – mixed with tonic water and precisely 3 slices of lemon.

A drink that’s main ingredient juniper is often mixed with others botanicals and combinations of spices with everything being added from coriander to frankincense, making the drink fit as a present for a Jesus – the holy water.

It’s responsible for the term Dutch Courage, with English Soldiers discovering in Holland that it calmed them before battle. A drink for the brave, the courageous, the English.

It hasn’t always had such a positive image, with Middlesex Magistrates in 1721 noticing that it was “the principal cause of all vice and debauchery committed among the inferior sort of people”.

Once hailed as Mother’s ruin due to the amount women were drinking and consequently neglecting their offspring, selling their daughters into prostitution, feeding it to their whining babies to quieten them. People sold their homes, their furnishing, their wives…in order to pay for a bottle.

So it begs the question, what drink can have gained such momentum in popularity as the tipple of the nation? The answer to that my friend, is the one, the only, the prestigious, Gin.
